On the beach

On the beach

A family tradition since we moved to York is to go to the coast at some point when we are together. We have been scanning the weather forecasts since people arrived and it didn’t look good, although I did see posts from other people at the coast, which seemed to be having brighter weather than we were getting in York.

Eventually we just had to seize the day, and go, as at least it wasn’t expected to rain, although fog seemed to feature it was not dense enough to stop us driving to Hornsea.

Hornsea is not as entertaining as Costa del Scarborough, but that is what I like about it. A long stretch of the beach is intersected by groynes, which can make a long walk tedious, but as the tide was in that wasn’t an issue.

If you can’t walk along the beach then the next best thing is winter waves, and we had those - enough to enjoy without risk.

As we walked further north we were able to get on to the beach, which is the shingle and sand. The shingle is a fascinating mix of pebbles, large and small, from many different rock types, some with fossils, always a delight.
Mixed in with the shingle are building materials which have probably come from houses lost to the sea from the cliffs above.

Someone had been on the beach before us and made a contribution to the local art, delighting passing children of all ages.

Made from objects found on the beach, there was a mix of pebbles and stones as well as eroded bricks and tiles.

Unfortunately there is also material that does not sit so well on the beach. I haven’t investigated in detail, but this pile includes a mix of fine net, rope and shreds of a knitted jumper.

I collected these to put in a bin, but they seem to have come home and are now in the garden being washed by the rain.
I haven’t quite decided whether they are ‘found objects’ that might one day become something or whether this collecting things ‘just in case’ is getting silly and they should go in the black bin. I shall be looking for inspiration amongst the artists who use such stuff in their work. Suggestions welcome.
