September Textile Love - Part 5

Day 25: Waste.

I hate waste and try to reduce the bits that go in the bin. Off cuts of fabric are saved for scrappy quilts, thread ends are saved too.
I was away from home for this post so this is my mini thread catcher catching trimmings from my slow stitching.
In due course I will find a use for them in another project.
Maybe I should separate them by colour as Justine Warner suggested at a recent talk to York Embroiderers and Stitchers.

Day 26: Indulgence

I have always loved books and they have been an indulgence throughout my earning years. First it was fiction and physics books; then fiction and physics books and knitting books; and now it is books related to stitching, with most fiction coming through my Audible subscription so I can listen while I stitch (currently Alan Rickman is reading Thomas Hardy’s Return of the Native).
These are just some of the books on my stitching shelves.

Day 27 Pattern

I have been collecting patterns all summer for my summer holiday task for my Textiles Practice course. I have collected some of them together in a concertina sketchbook
I loved the amazing variety of pattern-related work produced by fellow students this weekend. Take a look a #patternfinder21 on Instagram to see what people have been doing.

Day 28 Shadow

I captured this show on a morning run. Would I have noticed it if I hadn’t been looking for patterns for #patternfinder21

Day 29: Change

I found it hard to respond to this prompt.
However what has changed in the past year is my confidence to ‘have a go’ at drawing. From struggling to draw anything, a year ago to being willing to have a go and realising that not all drawings have to be photographic likenesses has been a big step. Thanks to @hannahlambtextileartist for holding my hand (metaphorically) on the beginning of this journey, a long way to go yet.

Day 30

IMG_3672.JPG

On the last day of September Textile Love @seam_collective asked us to select a piece of work by another artist.
Impossible to select one, so I have picked four pieces by artists I didn’t already know. Clockwise from top right:

Elsy Menko creates a wide variety of works using textiles, paper and stitch.

Julia Crook uses stitch to create wonderful textures in fabric.

Melissa Emerson creates beautiful drawings in stitch as well as three dimensional pieces such as the one I have included here.

Effie Jessop creates amazing digital images using words in counted thread work.

Artists taking part that I already follow and could have chosen, include @lindaharveytextiles @lesleybrankinart and @radicalembroiderer
You can see their work and many more by following #septtextilelove
